The creation of the magic wand
I got the idea in the middle of the night to make a magic wand like the ones in the Harry Potter movies, so I went out to find some materials to build it from. After I started building it, I thought it would be cool to have a storage box for it that also looked like it came from the wizard world of the Harry Potter movies, so I decided to make the whole thing appear as if it had originally come from the Ollivander's store of magic wands.

Now that the magic wand and its storage box is completed, it looks just the way I had imagined it, and I am very pleased with it and the colors that I gave it. This is certainly the wand that would be chosen for me. Feel free to use any ideas from this tutorial, and good luck making your own magic wand and storage box.

Project details

Project duration - 4 days.

Costs spent - $11 USD.

Accidents - None what so ever.

Thanks to

Ollivander's wand shop for inspiration.

J.K. Rowling for having made up the whole thing.
The materials that I found for the magic wand was a handle from a barbeque fork, and a small flag pole.
The chuck for the lathe was lost some while ago, so the flag pole had to be stuffed into the chuck mount instead, then the tip of the pole was shaped.
A long hole was drilled into the front of the handle for where the pole would be attached.
Because the previous drill bit was narrower than the pole and this drill bit was too large for the drill chuck, the drill bit had to be clamped into a vise, then the grip was manually rotated around it.
After the hole was finished, the pole was put into it and marked off at the top of the hole where the pole stopped.

This way it was easier to see where the glue and varnish should stop.
The back of the grip was cut off to remove the strap hole going through it.
The grip was put into the lathe and was given the right shape.
Two rings were shaped at the top of the grip to make it look more like some of the wands from the Harry Potter movies.
The bottom of the grip was shaped a little unsymmetrically, and a ring was also shaped there.
All the grain marks of the wood were opened up to make the wood look older.
A few coats of wood varnish was applied all over the grip.
After the varnish had dried, black coloring was applied around the rings and into the wood grain to make it all look older.
A small amount of copper color was dry-brushed around the end of the grip.
The pole was also coated with the same wood varnish all the way down to the marks that were made earlier.
A Phoenix feather was acquired
from an old, dusty shop somewhere in Diagon Alley.
The Phoenix feather was inserted into a hole inside the base of the wand pole.
With the magic Phoenix feather inside, the magic wand really worked well and could do just about anything I wanted it to.
To start making the storage box for the wand, a piece of cardboard was sectioned up to become the corners of the storage box.
After the cardboard had been cut in half, each piece were shaped into corners.
More cardboard pieces were shaped to fill in the rest of the storage box at the appropriate length for the magic wand.
A second layer of cardboard pieces were glued to the storage box to make it thicker.
A maroon colored paper was cut to the right length to cover up the storage box.
To give the paper the same leathery texture that was on the screen used boxes, the paper was crimped together all over.
After the whole surface of the paper had been crimped together, it was stretched out on a table edge to straighten the paper out again.
After all the paper had been straightened out, it very much looked like leathery paper.
The leathery textured paper was then glued onto the storage box.
The part inside the storage box that holds the wand in place was also made from cardboard.
A brown velvet fabric was glued onto the wand holding part.
After all the excess fabric had been cut away, the sides of the fabric were also glued to the cardboard.
Two thin ribbons were glued to the inside of the wand holding part.
Each ribbon were cut to the length where the ends met with the other side of the storage box.
Some of the ribbon fibers were removed from the front of each ribbon to give them the right fuzzy look as in the movies.
The wand holding part was glued to the inside of the storage box.
To make the stripes around the storage box, two strips of black and red paper were cut out.

The red strip was cut from the beginning of the paper roll where there was also a small yellow line.
The red strip was glued onto the larger black strip.
The whole strip was glued onto the storage box all around it.
The wand holding part was further glued onto the sides of the storage box to keep the sides in.
And of course I found some thicker cardboard for the lid after having made the other inner storage box.
The thicker cardboard was glued together to become the lid of the storage box.
The inside of the lid was lined with uncrimped paper.
More paper was crimped together for the lid, then it was glued onto it.
Here is a photo showing the fully lined and covered lid.
Both parts fit together very nicely.
A couple of small stickers with some numbers on them were made for the front of the storage box and the lid.

Possibly the numbers on the screen used props meant something, but these are just random anyway.
Here you can see the finished sticker on the lid of the storage box.
The other sticker on the inner storage box also covered up the ends of the strips running around it.
Some expensive gold paper was bought to make the label for the top of the lid.

The paper had instructions that it was possible to print things on it, so this was perfect.
After getting the scale of the print just right, the logo label was printed onto the gold paper.
After the label had been cut out, it was glued onto the lid.

The text on the label was slightly changed to say that the magic wand itself is a certified product, not only the storage box as the original labels stated.
And there you have a finished magic wand and a storage box.
