Preparing the crowbar
The crowbar is possibly the most iconic weapon in the whole Half-Life series, and of course I had to get one for this costume. The only problem was that European crowbars all seem to have a different shape than the crowbar used in the game, but instead of ordering in a crowbar from some country far away, I decided to buy an European crowbar anyway to later attempt to heat it up for reshaping it to the right look.
The crowbar I bought was painted red all over, but removing paint is not that hard.
Here you can see the second bend of the European crowbar which is absent from all the crowbars in the Half-Life series.
At least the other end of the crowbar had the right shape, except for the red paint.
The red paint was easily removed from the back using a sanding bit on a Dremel tool.
When not having a large furnace around, I had to do a little crowbarbequing instead.
A metal pipe was stuck inside the coal beneath the crowbar so that I could blow enough air onto the coal to heat up the crowbar for bending.
After enough heating, a sledgehammer was used to beat the fudge out of the crowbar until the second bend was gone.
Since the sledgehammer had turned some of the angles flat, they had to be reshaped with an angle-grinder.
A metal wire brush was mounted on the angle-grinder to make the top of the crowbar smooth and shiny.
The red paint that I used was actually deeper red than what was already on the crowbar, and it was applied by sponging it on to give it the same texture as the original paint.
I chose to have the red paint stop at a distance that was in between the crowbar from the first and the second game since these were supposedly meant to be the same crowbar.
After some weathering and dirt appliance, the crowbar looked very much like the one from the first game, but still similar to the one from the second game.
Now that my crowbar is finished, it sure takes me back to my earlier years where I played the Half-Life game series quite a lot. If the barbeque hadn't been found, I would probably have no way to reshape the crowbar, and in the end I'm really glad it worked. Feel free to use any ideas from this tutorial, and good luck preparing your own crowbar.
